Scholarship Application for

SYLVIA JANE HECK SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide scholarship grants and other financial aid to assist deserving working women in pursuing a degree and/or non-degree education in Bexar County, Texas.

History: Sylvia Jane Heck was a long-time member of TBW San Antonio who left a legacy to be used to assist deserving working women of Bexar County, Texas, who are seeking upward mobility through degree and/or non-degree education pursued in Bexar County, Texas.

Scholarship Amount: A maximum of $300.00 per course or non-degree course, up to a maximum award of $600.00 per semester. Awards may be granted up to a maximum of $1,200.00 per calendar year.

Scholarship Requirements:

Applicant must be female.
Applicant must be employed, full- or part-time.
Applicant must be at least 25 years old.
Applicant must be a resident of Bexar County, Texas.
Scholarship monies must be used at an accredited Texas college, university or non-degree educational program offered within Bexar County, Texas.
If seeking a degree, applicant must have completed at least two semesters of studies prior to applying for this scholarship.
If seeking non-degree education, applicant must be registered for the non-degree educational program and have already paid the fees associated therewith.
Scholarship monies will be paid directly to the registrar of recipient’s chosen college or university unless applicant is seeking non-degree education. In the event applicant is seeking non-degree education, scholarship monies will be paid to applicant contingent on proof of payment being provided by applicant.
A recipient of this scholarship remains eligible to apply for future Sylvia Jane Heck Scholarships up to the maximum amounts per semester and per year specified above.

Scholarship Criteria:

If seeking a degree:

Applicant must have a 3.0 or better grade point average; Submit certified transcripts of all college work.
An essay shall be submitted by the applicant, not to exceed two pages, supporting the Applicant’s need for the scholarship. In this essay, Applicant shall include her overall educational goals, current use of the coursework in which she is enrolled, the cost per course, how much the Applicant is requesting, and any other comments or information Applicant feels would help the trustees understand her request for assistance.
Two letters of reference must accompany the application (example: college professors, counselors, employers or professional colleagues);
If the application is approved, the name and address of the educational institution and student ID for the scholarship check.

2. If seeking non-degree education:

Applicant must provide proof of payment of the fees associated with the program, the total cost and length of the program and a short essay stating what the Applicant’s goals are with regard to this non-degree education, the amount that Applicant is requesting in assistance, and any comments or information Applicant feels would help the trustees understand her request for assistance.
Two letters of reference must accompany the application (example: college professors, counselors, employers or professional colleagues);
If the application is approved, proof of payment for the non-degree course is required before the Scholarship will be paid.

3. Applicant must provide proof that Applicant is a resident of Bexar County, Texas, such as a copy of current bill with Applicant’s name and address thereon.

4. The recipient of this scholarship is required to provide Texas Business and Professional Women’s Foundation with a digital photograph for publication and at least one message during the year regarding their experience.

Application Process

A new application must be completed for each educational event or semester. However, if applying for two courses in the same semester, only one application is needed. Each application is considered individually; application does not guarantee the awarding of a scholarship.

Applications are approved or disapproved by the trustees of the Texas BPW Foundation. All decisions of the trustees are final.

I have completed all the information on this application and certify that it is accurate and that my permission is given to verify and qualify all information provided in this application. Should I be chosen to receive this scholarship, I authorize the Texas Business and Professional Women's Foundation, Inc. to release my name and picture in marketing materials and/or the announcement of Scholarship awards. I understand that any award funds not used for this stated purpose must be refunded to TBPW Foundation.
